About the role

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is currently recruiting for Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members to work with the journal's Editor-in-Chief, Dr Ayman Ewies. The journal is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal publishing original research and reviews spanning the entire field of obstetrics and gynaecology. The scope of the journal includes general obstetrics and gynaecology, reproductive medicine, gynaecological oncology and breast disease. The role of Associate Editor is a great opportunity for an academic with a strong research background within the scope of the journal, who also has the commitment, drive and ability to help develop the journal. As part of this role, you will be responsible for the oversight and administration of a rigorous and proper peer review process that delivers an agreed amount of content of suitable scope and quality within an agreed publication timeframe. Applicants for the role of Associate Editor must:
  • Be an obstetrician and/or gynaecologist.
  • Have an academic track record.
  • Hold a senior position e.g. consultant / senior lecturer / associate professor / professor.
  • Previous editorial experience is desirable.
In this role you would be expected to:
  • Handle 2-3 manuscripts per month – invite reviewers, assess reviewer comments and make recommendations on decisions.
  • Access and progress manuscripts in the online peer review system twice a week.
  • Encourage the submission of articles to the journal through contact to people in your network a minimum of twice per year.
  • Invite content and support commission of these annually – e.g. special issue topics, topics for review articles, and opportunities to work with local societies and conferences.
  • Raise awareness of the journal to potential authors at relevant conferences attended.
  • Submit your own manuscripts to the journal.
  • Attend an annual online editorial board meeting and contribute to discussions on journal development.
Becoming the Associate Editor of a journal is a rewarding and fulfilling experience where you have the opportunity to build your own networks, develop and promote the research in your field, and be recognized as a leading figure within the academic community. The journal is also seeking applications for Editorial Board Members. Editorial Board Members do not directly organise the peer review process but have a vital role in supporting the journal through submitting peer review reports, promoting it in their networks, and contributing to journal strategy and development. Applications for the Editorial Board are encouraged across career stages but must be an obstetrician and/or a gynaecologist. There is a minimum expectation that you will have some experience of publishing and reviewing for international journals but we welcome applications ranging from those early in their career to those who are more senior in their roles. In this role you would be expected to:
  • Review 1 manuscript per month for the journal.
  • Encourage the submission of articles to the journal through contact to people in your network a minimum of twice per year.
  • Invite content and support commission of these during the appointed term – e.g. special issue topics, topics for review articles, and opportunities to work with local societies and conferences.
  • Raise awareness of the journal to potential authors at relevant conferences attended.
  • Submit your own manuscripts to the journal.
  • Attend an annual online editorial board meeting and contribute to discussions on journal development.
Both Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members play an active role in supporting the journal. We welcome ideas for journal development from all.

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology represents an established forum for the entire field of obstetrics and gynaecology, publishing a broad range of original, peer-reviewed papers, from scientific and clinical research to reviews relevant to practice. It also includes occasional supplements on clinical symposia. The scope of the journal includes general obstetrics and gynaecology, reproductive medicine, gynaecological oncology as well as breast disease. The main readership of journal are clinicians; therefore, basic science research without direct clinical impact may be beyond their interest. The journal is read widely by trainees in our specialty and we acknowledge a major role in education in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Past and present editors have recognized the difficulties that junior doctors encounter in achieving their first publications and spend time advising authors during their initial attempts at submission. The journal continues to attract a world-wide readership thanks to the emphasis on practical applicability and its excellent record of drawing on an international base of authors.
