About the role
- Supporting the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) to facilitate the smooth operation of the journal.
- Working with the EiC and other AEs to develop the strategic work of the journal.
- Collating peer reviewers' responses to submitted papers, making judgements as to the quality of those reviews, filling the gaps in reviews where necessary, then selecting the appropriate response that goes to the original author.
- Being an ambassador and a critical friend of the journal within appropriate forums. Contributing to the dissemination of the journal's publications through different social media activities.
- Acting as a mentor to new peer reviewers and new authors to help them understand the processes of journal submission and supporting them as they work towards reviewing/submission.
- Liaising with art therapy networks to ensure that there is a good understanding of the journal's processes within the wider art therapy profession.
- Contributing to the dissemination of IJAT publications via social media.
About the journal
International Journal of Art Therapy is a leading publication of international art therapy literature and official journal of the British Association of Art Therapists.
The aims of the journal are:
To advance the understanding of how art therapy, delivered by trained art therapists (also known as art psychotherapists), may contribute to effective interventions for service users through publishing:
- Ethical, high quality research papers.
- Diverse, innovative practice papers including service user feedback.
- Original, evidence-informed opinion pieces.
To further develop knowledge in the fields of art therapy research, practice, theory, and pedagogy in a global context for:
- Art therapists.
- Educators and trainees.
- Service users and members of the public.
- Allied health professionals.
- Mental health practitioners.
- Other professionals.
To include service user and lived experience perspectives in all aspects of this work.

Actions for Change
The International Journal of Art Therapy’s actions for change were developed in response to the calls of #BlackLivesMatter, following the murder of George Floyd during the Covid-19 pandemic, urging us all to re-examine the inclusivity of our institutions. Peer Review Integrity
All articles in this journal, including those in special issues, have undergone rigorous peer review. All peer review is double anonymized and submission is online via Taylor & Francis submission system.

Key Skills and Attributes
- 1/2 day per week for Associate Editor tasks.
- Online Board meetings (4 x 2-hour meetings per year).
- One annual CPD course provided by the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).
- Access to the annual BAAT conference recordings and presentations.
- Free access to Taylor & Francis editor symposiums.
- Expertise in methodologies and methods for areas of research including any of the following: quantitative; qualitative; mixed methods; arts-based and arts-informed; intervention development; evaluation; or other specialist areas of research.
- Experience of researching art therapy or a related field – including clinical, community, or education-based.
- A track record of peer reviewed research publications.
- Significant experience as a peer reviewer.
- Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, OneDrive and ScholarOne submission systems.
Previous experience as a journal Peer Reviewer, Associate Editor or Board Member.
