About the role
International Journal of Remote Sensing is currently recruiting for Editor-in-Chief.
We welcome applications from academics with a strong track record in the theory, science and technology of remote sensing.
This is an excellent opportunity for leaders who will shape the journal’s editorial vision, drive the growth of high-quality submissions, and champion excellence within the research community.
In this role, you will:
- Make final editorial decisions on acceptance, revision, or rejection of submitted manuscripts.
- Direct the peer-review process, ensuring rigorous, fair, transparent, and timely evaluations.
- Lead and expand the Editorial Board, recruiting diverse experts to support emerging research areas.
- Set the strategic vision in partnership with the Publisher to increase citations, impact, and high-quality submissions.
- Commission high-impact content, including themed collections, expert perspectives, and review articles.
- Uphold research integrity, addressing ethical issues in line with COPE guidelines.
- Act as the public face of the journal at international conferences and within the academic community.

About the journal
International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS) is a subscription-based peer reviewed journal publishing international research on remote sensing of the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and the terrestrial earth, as well as human modifications to the earth system.
An official journal of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society, International Journal of Remote Sensing addresses the theory, science and technology of remote sensing and novel applications of remotely sensed data.
The IJRS Drones Section publishes research related to remote sensing with unmanned aerial systems (UASs, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones) The journal covers the following topics:
- Remotely sensed data collection, analysis, interpretation and display
- Surveying from space, air, water and ground platforms
- Imaging and related sensors
- Image processing
- Use of remotely sensed data
- Economic surveys and cost-benefit analyses
Key Skills and Attributes
- Experience in academic publishing and familiarity with all stages of the process.
- The capacity to devote time each week to the role, and to attend editor meetings and training sessions as needed.
- The ability to ensure all submitted manuscripts are considered in a prompt, consistent and professional manner.
- The ability to confidently use an online peer review management system and ensure members of the editorial team do the same.
- Experience with working effectively with independent peer reviewers.
- The ability to read, summarize, and make decisions based on independent reviewer reports.
- A commitment to communicating promptly, consistently, and professionally with authors during the peer review process.
- A commitment to engaging promptly and efficiently with Taylor & Francis staff and suppliers to implement necessary processes and improvements.
- A strong commitment to ethical rigour as well as knowledge of the COPE guidelines and commitment to ensure that the journal adheres to strict ethical standards at all times.
- A proven track record as a key opinion leader and known figure within your academic discipline.
- Actively involved in growing and developing your academic networks through conference attendance and experience of networking through social media.
- A vision and enthusiasm for the continuous development of the journal
Application instructions
Applications should include your CV, a Cover Letter and a Vision Statement.
Your Vision Statement should be no longer than 500 words and include how you would:
- Direct the editorial vision and scope of the journal in collaboration with the publisher.
- Maintain high ethical standards and ensure compliance with Editorial policies.
- Act as an ambassador for the journal at academic conferences and on social media.
- Drive sustainable and timely high-quality submissions, through commissioning and content development, in collaboration with the publisher.
- Lead the editorial board in setting priorities for the journal’s content.
- Work with the publisher to appoint additional Lead Editors, Supporting Editors and Advisors to the journal.
